The technology industry is characterized by fast-paced growth, high paying jobs, innovation, and constant change. The industry is emerging in Saskatchewan and needs special attention to survive and thrive as it becomes established. Technology companies are notorious for their ability to move swiftly to an environment that suits their particular needs or improves their situation. To ensure that our companies, and thus our industry, continie to grow in Saskatchewan, and to attract companies from outside of Saskatchewan, we need to pay considerable attention to our business environment.
Key highlights - The data that emerged from the 935 companies in the technology industry in Saskatchewan:
- They employed approximately 27,015 employees in 2004.
- They had an estimated payroll of about $1.5 billion.
- They purchased about $1.4 billion in goods and services from Saskatchewan companies.
- They had gross sales revenues of about $5.1 billion.
- Reporting companies indicated an overall 4.8% increase in sales between 2003-04.
- Total sales to Saskatchewan clients by firms in 2004 were about $2.3 billion.
- About 24.8% of revenues in 2004 were derived from export sales, the biggest of which is the United States, followed by the European Union.
- They are small: slightly more than half of companies responding expected sales to range from $100,001 to $2.5 million.
- The ICT/New Media sector is the fastest-growing sector in Saskatchewan technology industry.
- The most export-oriented sectors are electronics and instrumentation; life sciences and information and communications technology.
